Teaching Tolerance

This post by Riftgirl is one that I highly recommend everyone read - especially if they have any kids or grandkids who are or will be in school.

This comment has less to do with the linked content and more to do with the blog title. I think it's time to move beyond the language of tolerance. Tolerance implies a "grin and bear it" coersion. I think it's time to teach respect. Most violent acts are the result of someone feeling disrespected. Our culture has taught the respect must be "earned" which has only brought us an increase in gang violence, domestic violence, etc. The essence of nonviolence is giving "diginity" or respect to the other regardless. I believe this is why it works. Maybe instead of saying we must love our enemy, we should say we must respect our enemy, give diginity to the enemy. Stepping from tolerance to respect will be difficult but it's the only thing that will ultimately lead us to a nonviolent future.

Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing. To keep our faces toward change and behave like free spirits in the presence of fate is strength undefeatable.

I have come into this world to see this:
the sword drop from men's hands even at the height
of their arc of anger
because we have finally realized there is just one flesh to wound
and it is His - the Christ's, our
Beloved's.
