Celebrating the death of this mass killer caused consternation in many corners of this nation.
Characteristically, I mulled over why people would celebrate the death this nation's most wanted.
I remember that many throughout the Arab world celebrated (cheered, passed out candy, and fired rifle rounds into the sky) when learning of bin Laden's 9-11 successes that brought down the Twin Towers, and a large section of the Pentagon.
Since many of the revelers were young (but not all), and from nearby colleges, I wondered how much of what happened that fateful day in September had they remembered?
Were they exposed to these visuals then or later as 9-11 was perhaps discussed in their various classes?
Hoping that this was the case, I nevertheless had my doubts. These young people represented a sizable cross-section of this nation's youth, and very likely came from homes of financially successful parents who valued education and intellectual pursuits.
If the celebrations were as spontaneous as they seemed, what values are we guilty of passing along to them, from within our homes, our schools, our news media, and our entertainment outlets, and what does it say about who we were, and who we've now become.
I don't know for sure, but perhaps this is who we are as a nation, reflected in the actions and behavior of our youth, but many of us are too chagrin to admit it.
